Things were normal. Which, in March, meant harried and difficult. I had just come off a very persistent and debilitating illness. My son and his father had also been sick. But otherwise, it was the regular time of year when things are dark, cold, and urgent with everybody eager to get to spring, sluggish from the time change. We were all so done with the winter.

I, in particular, was done with that winter. It had been a tough time personally. I had bled money and gone through some things that wear the soul down into wood shavings, particles of dust, life’s…
